Perugia #6: Two of the most poignant scenes in Perugia

[click for larger images]

Above: shot 43

Above: In late July, Perugia was relatively quiet. But summer courses continued, and students were still in town.

Nationalities? Many Italians of course. But many others too. Especially American, British, and Chinese.

A clear majority of them at the time were women.

One of the exercises became how to take photographs without including a 20-year-old in almost every shot.

This shot is an exception. The girl was reading under a street light at sunset - and she never ever looked up.

Safe and relaxed there.

Perhaps 300 feet down, and 300 yards to the right, almost in the shot, is the former home of Meredith Kercher.

Above: shot 45

Above: A beautiful intersection, beautifully lit. It is at the bottom end of the English girls’ street.

It was right about here that Meredith Kercher said goodbye to her friend Sophie Purton and continued on to her fate.

Where Meredith looked on the last friendly, familiar face she ever saw in her short lifetime.

Perugia #5: Shots where Knox and Sollecito may have watched house

These shots are referred to on pages 25 and 26 of the True Crime Meredith Kercher forum.

[click for larger images]

Above: shot 46

Above: Amanda and Raffaele may have sat on that low wall; or on a bench to the left

The gate of the house can be watched from among the trees at left-back there

Shots in the first post below make very clear that the gate is in clear line of sight

Above: shot 38

Above: This is the piazza. The basketball court is at back there and the house off at left-center.

The previous shot was taken over at the far right, and facing toward the left in this shot.

The bench at right faces the piazza and international school and seems irrelevant to the story.

Did witness Toto observe Amanda and Raffaele from one of those benches at left there?

Above: shot 39

Above: Was Toto watching Amanda and Raffaele from that bench with people on it?

Above: shot 41

Above and below: Okay, expand the PDF and you will see THREE benches, backs to street

Unclear as of this time where witness Toto and suspects Knox and Sollecito may have sat

Expand the shot below and you’ll see the end of a bench on each side of the blue tank thing

Perugia #4: Shots of where the Albanian had alleged encounters

These shots are referred to on pages 25 and 26 of the True Crime Meredith Kercher forum.

Above and below: The Albanian said his first enounter with the trio was beside an edera plant.

Above: shot 34

Above: shot 35

Above: The Albanian said that Rudy was standing at a point below the road.

Above: shot 36

Above: The t-junction again, with the probable breakdown truck area off to the left.

Above: shot 40

Above: And the street up which Raffaele Solecito may have chased the Albanian’s car

Above: shot 14

Above: While Raffaele ran up the street, was Rudy simultaneously running up these steps?

Perugia #3: Shots of mini-market bleach

These shots are referred to on pages 25 and 26 of the True Crime Meredith Kercher forum.

Above: shot 31

Above: Spray bottles of Ace bleach + detergent are on the second shelf above the large bottle.

Above: shot 32

Above: Mistakenly thought to have been THE bleach as it was the only pure bleach.

Above: shot 37

Above: Just an irony, not significant: the laundromat a few yards from Raffaele’s place

Perugia #2: Shots of the adjacent parking facility, CCTV cameras, and house

[click for larger image]

Above: shot 23

Above and three shots below: This is the entrance ramp to the upper level of the parking facility.

You can see the gate of the house directly opposite above.

The facility appears to be owned and operated by the city. Several hundred cars use that ramp every day to get to the top level.

Also, pedestrians use that ramp. Meredith would have used it to get to her English friends, and Amanda to get to the Chic bar.

They would walk the top level of the parking facility to the steel stairs (shots to come). and then onto the street above.

Those are rather classy apartments you can see, by the way. Very unlikely that any students are living in them.

Above: shot 24

Above: shot 25

Above: shot 26

Above and below: Three shots of the heavy-duty CCTV cameras pointed at the entrance barrier.

The camera below almost certainly had a good view of the street by the gate of the house.

And it seems extremely likely that it would take in the area around the dumpsters as well.

The recordings from this camera looks to be a real sleeper in this case.

Above: shot 27

Above: shot 28

Above: shot 29

Above and below: Final two shots of the Kercher-Knox house, the street above, and the parking facility.

Many more shots of all three in the longer version to come.

See that large church above? Directly in line with that church, at back, are Rafaelle’s and Rudy’s apartments.

About 10 minutes of walking if you are in a real hurry. All of it uphill. At a guess it is a 300-foot climb.

Above: shot 30

Above: The green shutters at extreme right are those of Meredith’s room. The only bedroom to have a view.

The largest window in the house. The views would have been superb; shots of those views in the long version.

The view from the kitchen window in the other wing would have been mostly blocked by the new wing.

Perugia #1: Shots of park, t-junction, and dumpsters

[click for larger image]

Above: shot 01

Above: The basketball court. The t-junction and dumpsters are straight ahead, the steps are to the right.

The Kercher-Knox house is about in a direct line with the hoop stand, maybe 150 yards behind it and below it.

The international university and the street up to Rafaelle’s and Rudy’s apartments are off to the left.

Above: shot 02

Shots above and below of the sandy area adjacent to the street down to the t-junction.

No-one was ever seen in this long narrow forest area in half a dozen visits over two days.

One theory has it that Amanda and Raffaele hid out here watching the gate of the house.

For a few days after the crime, there might have been identifiable footprints in the white sand.

Above: shot 03

Above: shot 04

Above and below: This street is the shortest route from the Kercher-Knox house to the apartments of Rafaelle and Rudy.

And to the international school. It has to be one of the nastiest streets for pedestrians in all of Perugia.

You can actually see the fear in their faces and their body language.

It is very busy most of the day. There are frequent stops and go-slows. It has a steep slope, and there are blind corners at top and bottom.

You dont have to wait very long to hear a screech of tires or brakes. Alternative? Use the steps. If you know they are there.

Above: shot 05

Above: shot 06

Above: This is a zoom shot of the gate of the Kercher-Knox house from the sandy tree-filled area shown above.

Shown here because one theory has it that Amanda and Raffaele hid out here for a while, watching that gate.

Above: shot 07

Above and below: That dangerous street again. Early afternoon when everything slows.

This is the street up which Rafaelle is said to have chased the Albanian’s car to the light at top.

Then what, Rafaelle? What was the plan? The square at top is always full of people. Always.

To the right of the red car is the bottom of the steps that head up toward the central piazza.

Above: shot 08

Above: shot 09

Above: A Volkswagen Golf manoeuvering in the t-junction to park against the building at right.

The Albanian drives this kind of car.

On the night in question, he was apparently intending to park to the left of the blue tank thing at rear.

Unfortunately he seems to have nudged a prostrate Amanda and Rafaelle 100 or so feet to the right.

And so their brief and very angry exchange on the street at bottom here was set in motion.

Above: shot 10

Above: This shot is from just inside the entrance to the car-park of the pizzeria that overlooks the t-junction.

Shot 16 shows the pizzeria entrance and its car-park from another angle.

It is here that both the Albanian and two diners report that a car had broken down near that entrance.

Above: shot 11

Above and two below: Where Amanda and Rafaelle may have been lurking and watching the gate.

As you can see, even in the daytime, it is hard to see if there is anyone up there (usually there isnt).

Above: shot 12

Above: shot 13

Above: shot 14

Above and below: Two shots of the steps. A running Rudy may have bumped into the two diners on these steps.

They are definitely the fast way up to the central piazza, in conjunction with more steps above the street at top.

Shots of those other steps (a real surprise; only locals would know of them) in the long version of these shots.

Above: shot 15

Above: shot 16

Above: The angle of this shot of the park is DIRECTLY in front of the gate of the Kercher-Knox house.

It is not possible to get a better view from the house. At back-center the Albanian said a car had broken down.

The building just peeping out at top right in the shot is the international school.

Above: shot 17

Above and three shots below: These are the recycling tanks and carts collectively known as the dumpsters.

They are components of a national recycling program. You can see exactly this arrangement repeated all over Italy.

If the Albanian was trying to park and he did bump something, it would have been the blue tank thing.

Above: shot 18

Above: shot 19

Below: One of the recycling tanks - and the gate and the roof of the Kercher-Knox house.

Above: shot 20

Above: shot 21

Above and below: Sad beyond belief to see the weeds growing in the yard and the dying fig tree.

The gate is padlocked and the black and green mailboxes stuffed with old papers.

It was unclear what those two white boxes are at right. Lockable mailboxes, maybe?
